Introduction to bioprocessing

Edinburgh | 2 days

Course aims:

The FlexBio centre will offer a 2-day intensive practical skills course tailored to a range of subjects including end to end bioprocessing, upstream development and downstream processing. Learners will be taken through a range of practical exercises within an industrial setting. In addition, learners will also gain experience in more general industrial lab skills and receive consolidation and context from lectures led by IBioIC industry partners.

What you will learn:

The aims of the course are:

  • Gain an introductory background to upstream and downstream bioprocessing from a process, practicality, and quality standpoint, learning how does this relate to process and product design
  • Observe on-site demonstrations of upstream processing equipment including stirred tank bioreactors, wave bags and stainless systems used to grow cultures to 30L scale
  • Gain an understanding of how they work, how they are setup and maintained, and how cultures are scaled up from lab-scale
  • Observe on-site demonstrations of downstream processing equipment including disc stack continuous centrifuge, homogeniser cell lysis, TFF filtration and chromatography.
  • Take part in a downstream process extracting foaming proteins from a beer fermentation to gain a better understanding
  • Gain an understanding of the challenges of scaling up downstream processes and the type of equipment used, as well as the broad range of applications they can be used on

Location:

FlexBio at Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh.

Fundamental advanced therapies laboratory skills in biosafety testing

Glasgow | 5 days

Course aims:

Delivered in collaboration with our strategic training partner Merck Life Sciences, this five-day course introduces GLP/GMP/GDocP, core laboratory skills, gowning, aseptic working and environmental monitoring. The content has been developed with close links to industry to ensure authenticity and consistency with industry labs and methods.

The course takes place over 3 days at Ayrshire Colleges modern Kilwinning lab facility and 2 days at Merck’s start of the art Glasgow training facility that provides delegates with the opportunity to gain hands-on practical training in complex biotesting procedures.

Learning outcomes:

  • Develop and apply an understanding of GLP/GMP/GDocP.
  • Gowning – the different approaches and the understanding behind each requirement.
Housekeeping – our first line in defence in maintaining an environment which is critical to work, ensuring we meet the standards required.
  • Aseptic – what does it mean to work within a Biological Safety Cabinet but also how the process before and after contribute to an environment suitable for safety testing.
  • Environmental Monitoring – follows on from housekeeping and aseptic technique as a monitoring system; how we monitor and evaluate the building for suitability.
  • Equipment – all equipment is under strict monitoring and functionality testing; this will provide the knowledge around the requirements and include practical exercises.
  • Preparing reagents – can delegates follow instructions, perform calculations and execute the task in an aseptic manner to prepare a reagent all whilst accurately documenting the activity.
